We normally tend to think of ‘health’ as physical. The word ‘health’ triggers images of a healthy diet, consuming sufficient fluids, exercising, having a good night’s sleep, etc. We need to be in good physical health in order to be able to perform our duties efficiently. However, mental health is equally important, if not more, to experience a happy and healthy lifestyle.
While physical well-being is largely related to our bodies and affects parameters like blood circulation and movements, mental health relates to emotions. It has a direct bearing on psychological well being, and affects social life also. Mental health has a direct impact on our thoughts, sentiments, behavior, actions and consequently, inter-personal relations. Mental health defines how well we handle situations. At workplaces, it affects productivity and efficiency.
It is necessary for our bodies to be in good physical condition, to be in good mental health. A balanced diet and regular exercises are a must as all organs including the brain are kept active, well-nourished, and functioning properly. A healthy body enhances self-esteem and improves concentration. It induces sound sleep, restores body tissues, and recharges the body. It is imperative for one to have proper exercise, as exercise stimulates vital organs of the body. Exercise, good diet, good habits and discipline make for a healthy body – a pre-requisite to have good mental health.
Good physical health cannot be enjoyed without good mental health. The converse of this is also true. It is well known that three quarters of human ailments are psychosomatic in nature. Psychosomatic disorder is a psychological condition where physical symptoms manifest themselves, causing physical discomfort to the patient. Emotional stress exacerbates the psychosomatic illness and causes physical pain and discomfort, leading to hypertension, respiratory problems, migraine, or ulcers. People with this condition feel overwhelmed about the symptoms, and encounter difficulty in performing well.
A few tips: Be open, and communicative about your feelings, especially when troubled. Avoid bottling up emotions. Indulge in activities you are good at, activities you enjoy and find relaxing. It could be socializing, reading a book, going on a trip, or gardening. Such pleasurable activities help overcome stress, and build self-esteem. In short, keep active, eat and drink sensibly, communicate, be in touch, ask for help when required, take a break or have a change of scene to de-stress. Make a conscious effort to feel good about yourself. Accept yourself as you are, and do not compare yourself unfavorably with others. These small tips will help you to stay in good mental health lifelong.
